Facebook can be a weird place at times. People just hit share without verifying anything. People share articles about celebrity deaths from years ago. People share the dumbest memes I have ever seen too. I oftem see memes that try to make deep points but quite a few of them end up making the argument that “1+2= bananas.”
STUPID!
This morning I saw a meme that inspired a post. The meme is stupid as shit! First it is assuming that women only look to celebrities for physical and fashion inspiration. Also, so what! Why is it wrong that Amber and Rihanna were used as hair inspiration? Second it’s assuming that there are no role models out there that would inspire women to reach higher education goals.
This weekend, my mentoring group met with our young ladies ranging in age from 11 to 18 years old. My Sorors and I led discussions on positive body image, self-esteem, and healthy sexual relationships. We had thoughtful and engaging sessions with our young ladies. We gave them a safe space to ask questions and it allowed us to see what issues they are dealing with.
One of my Sorors gave an impassioned speech about we love them and want them to learn from our mistakes to make a better path for themselves. There was not a dry eye in the room! When ended the day with release negative energy and writing love letters to ourselves. What a phenomenal day it was!
I am still riding the high of such a love fest and display of sisterhood, so when I read that meme I was like stop the fucking presses! I thought about the countless women I know out here being examples for young women. I can name dozens of women who are not only being that example but reaching back to the younger generation to show that what you always see in the media isn’t the only path to success.
I just don’t understand the point of a meme like this. I just ask that we stop sharing stupid shit like this on the internet!
